In this third post we're going to talk about MADRID!
Madrid is the capital of Spain and the Spanish city that attracts more visitors. With over 4 million visitors in 2013, Madrid sits in ninth place in Europe.
The number of tourists from Madrid grows year after year due to a perfect combination of cultural, monumental and leisure.
Some places that you cannot leave to go if you visit Madrid, are:
- LA PUERTA DEL SOL: It's one of the most famous squares in Madrid. Here you will find interesting points of interest such as El Oso de Madrid and Kilómetro Cero.
- LA PLAZA MAYOR: It's located a few meters from Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace and is one of the oldest squares in Spain built by Juan de Herrera and Juan Gomez de Mora in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
-LA GRAN VÍA: It's the most famous street in Madrid, there we will find the more important cinemas and theaters in the city. "A street that never sleeps".
- EL RETIRO: It's the most famous park in Madrid since opening to the public in the nineteenth century, if you go with kids you've to visit it!
- LA PUERTA DE ALCALA: It's one of the most representative monuments of Madrid, it was built by Francisco Sabatini during the reign of Carlos III.
- EL RASTRO: This is an outdoor market on Sundays and public holidays celebrated in the historic center of Madrid, in the popular district of La Latina.
In addition, Madrid can boast of having some of the most important museums in the world, we will present you the main ones:
- MUSEO DEL PRADO: is the most famous museum in Madrid and one of the most important museums of world art. Among its artists are painters such as Velazquez and Goya.
- MUSEO REINA SOFIA: this museum offers to the visitors an extensive collection of works of contemporary Spanish art. Among its outstanding artists names like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro.
- MUSEO THYSSEN BORNEMISZA: is one of the most important art museums in Madrid and complements the collections of the Prado and Reina Sofia Museum. It comprises more than 800 works that the Thyssen-Bornemisza family collected over two generations.
Also, you have at your disposal the "Madrid Card", which offers free access to the 50 more important museums and monuments of Madrid and provides discounts on many activities and restaurants. The price of the Madrid Card varies depending on the days that will be used:
- Madrid Card 1 day: 42.75€
- Madrid Card 2 days: 52.25€
- Madrid Card 3 days: 61.75€
- Madrid Card 5 days: 71.25€
Finally, if you go to Madrid with kids you cannot leave to go to Madrid Warner Park. This park is one of the most modern parks in Europe, especially for its attractions, many of which are unique in Europe; like the second highest tower of free fall in the word and dozens of attractions for family and children.
